For your engine to work efficiently, you accommodate your speed by changing gears. In a manual car, the driver presses the clutch pedal and changes gears from the stick shift (gearbox.) An automatic car does not have a clutch so you don’t need to change gears. There’s only a brake and accelerator in an automatic car, making it less complicated to drive than a manual car.
